Warlock: Curses & utility

Client build 1.60.1.70425 · updated

What a Warlock brings to a group, and what it costs.

How this works

One curse and one Bane per Warlock per target; Healthstones and the summon are what groups ask you for.

Curses and Banes

One curse and one Bane per Warlock on each target. A Mage's Remove Lesser Curse and an Orc's Shatter Curse remove both.

IconSpellLevelWhat it does
Curse of Weakness4

Physical damage caused by the target is reduced by 37 for 2 min. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Slightly bigger than Classic (37 at top rank, was 31). Amplify Curse adds 50%.

Bane of Agony8

Afflicts the target with agony, causing 552 Shadow damage over 24 sec. This damage is dealt slowly at first, and builds up as the Bane reaches its full duration. Only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Renamed from Curse of Agony, and no longer a curse. One Bane per Warlock per target, so it runs beside your curse. Top rank 552 over 24 s (Classic 1044). A Mage's Remove Lesser Curse and an Orc's Shatter Curse remove Banes too.

Curse of Recklessness14

Curses the target with recklessness, reducing the target's armor by 505 for 2 min. Cursed enemies will not flee and will ignore Fear and Horror effects. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Lowers armour only; the target no longer gains attack power. The tooltip still says the target won't flee and ignores Fear and Horror, so it cancels your own Fear and Death Coil on that target.

Curse of the Elements20

Curses the target for 5 min, reducing Magic resistances by 75 and increasing Magic damage taken by 10%. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Learned at 20 (Classic 32) and covers all Magic schools, which is why Curse of Shadow is gone: 4/6/8/10% more Magic damage taken at 20/30/40/50. The raid curse, and free to keep up now that your damage DoTs are Banes.

Curse of Exhaustion25talent

Reduces the target's movement speed by 30% for 12 sec. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Affliction's 16-point gold talent (needs Amplify Curse): 30% slower for 12 s (Classic 10%). Your main slow (Destruction also gets a Conflagrate daze from Aftermath).

Curse of Tongues26

Forces the target to speak in Demonic, increasing the casting time of all spells by 60%. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target. Lasts 30 sec.

What to know: Same numbers as Classic: casts 50% slower, 60% at rank 2.

Bane of Havoc30talent

Afflicts the target for 5 min, causing 15% of all damage done by the Warlock to other targets to also be dealt to the cursed target. Bane of Havoc is limited to 1 target, and only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Destruction's 21-point gold talent: mark one target, and 15% of your damage to anything else also hits it. Uses your Bane slot.

Bane of Doom60

Afflicts the target with impending doom, causing 1742 Shadow damage after 1 min. If the target dies from this damage, there is a chance that a Doomguard will be summoned. Cannot be cast on players. Only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Renamed from Curse of Doom. 1742 after one minute (Classic 3200), with a much bigger spell-power share; 1-minute cooldown. It shares the Bane slot with Agony, so a target gets one or the other. Can summon a Doomguard if the Bane kills.

Demons

Every demon but the Imp costs a soul shard. Demons scale with your gear and can't take player stat buffs; heals and shields land on them.

IconSpellLevelWhat it does
Summon Imp1

Summons an Imp under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: Free: no soul shard. Blizzard nerfed it on purpose after it out-damaged a Demonology Warlock.

Summon Voidwalker10

Summons a Voidwalker under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: Your levelling tank from 10. Costs a soul shard. Demons scale with your gear and can't take player stat buffs, but a Priest's shields and heals land on it (tested).

Summon Incubus20

Summons an Incubus under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: A male Sayaad with the same spells as the Succubus (in Classic Era since 1.14.2). Its model is a lower-resolution swap.

Summon Succubus20

Summons a Succubus under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: The Sayaad. Seduction is your best humanoid crowd control. Costs a soul shard.

Demonic Sacrifice20talent

When activated, sacrifices your summoned Demon to enhance the opposing aspect of your power, granting you an effect that lasts 2 hrs. The effect is canceled if any Demon is summoned.

Imp: Increases your Shadow damage by 15%.

Voidwalker: Restores 2% of your total Mana every 4 sec.

Succubus/Incubus: Increases your Fire damage by 15%.

Felhunter: Restores 3% of your total Health every 4 sec.

What to know: Demonology's 11-point gold talent. Lasts 2 hours (Classic 30 minutes), and the bonuses are swapped: the Imp now gives +15% Shadow and the Sayaad +15% Fire. Demonic Pact lets you keep it while another demon is out.

Subjugate Demon30

Subjugates the target demon, up to level 64, forcing it to do your bidding. While subjugated, the time between the demon's attacks is increased by 40% and its casting speed is slowed by 30%. Lasts up to 5 min. If you repeatedly subjugate the same demon, it will become more difficult to control with each attempt.

What to know: Enslave Demon in the original game; Classic Era renamed it too (1.14.4). Same effect.

Summon Felhunter30

Summons a Felhunter under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: Devour Magic (your dispel) from 30, and Spell Lock (your interrupt) from 36, past the beta cap. Costs a soul shard.

Inferno50

Summons a meteor from the Twisting Nether, causing 200 Fire damage and stunning all enemy targets in the area for 2 sec. An Infernal rises from the crater, under the command of the caster for 5 min. Once control is lost, the Infernal must be Subjugated to maintain control. Can only be used outdoors.

What to know: Needs an Infernal Stone (client data). The Reagent Economy legacy perk covers vendor reagents like this one, but not soul shards.

Ritual of Doom60

Begins a ritual that sacrifices a random participant to summon a doomguard. The doomguard must be immediately subjugated or it will attack the ritual participants. Requires the caster and 4 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete.

Soul shards, stones and summons

Conjured stones vanish if you are logged out for more than 15 minutes.

IconSpellLevelWhat it does
Drain Soul10

Drains the soul of the target, causing 420 Shadow damage over 15 sec. Non-trivial targets damaged by Drain Soul have a chance to grant you a Soul Shard. Non-trivial targets killed by Drain Soul will always grant you a Soul shard. Soul Shards are required for other spells.

What to know: Shards without a kill: a damaging tick on a non-trivial target can grant a soul shard, and a kill during the channel always does. Starting any other cast ends the channel, so make it the last spell on a dying mob. Ticks can crit.

Create Healthstone10

Creates a Major Healthstone that can be used to instantly restore 1440 health.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: 120 health at rank 1, 1440 at rank 5 (Classic 1200). Healthstones have their own 2-minute cooldown, separate from potions (client data; the same as Classic). Conjured stones vanish if you are logged out for more than 15 minutes.

Create Soulstone18

Creates a Major Soulstone. The Soulstone can be used to store one target's soul. If the target dies while their soul is stored, they will be able to resurrect with 2200 health and 2800 mana.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: Stores a party member's soul so they can rise after dying. 30-minute cooldown (client item data, as Classic).

Ritual of Summoning20

Begins a ritual that summons the targeted group member. Requires the caster and 2 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must be out of combat and right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete.

What to know: The only summon in the game: meeting stones don't summon and the group finder doesn't teleport. You plus 2 party members click the portal, all out of combat. Costs a soul shard.

Shadowburn20talent

Instantly blasts the target for 259 to 288 Shadow damage. If the target dies within 8 sec of Shadowburn, and yields experience or honor, the caster gains a Soul Shard.

What to know: Destruction's 11-point gold talent: 15 s cooldown, 30 yards (Classic 20), and a shard back if the target dies within 8 s (Classic 5).

Create Firestone28

Creates a Major Firestone which can be used to enchant your weapon with Fire, increasing your spell critical strike chance by 2% and the damage done by your Fire spells by up to 21.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: Now a weapon enchant, not an off-hand: +1–2% spell crit and more Fire damage.

Create Spellstone36

Creates a Major Spellstone which can be used to enchant your weapon with Shadow, increasing your spell haste by 2% and the damage done by your Shadow spells by up to 21.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: Now a weapon enchant, not an off-hand: +1–2% spell haste and more Shadow damage.

Soul Fire48

Burn the enemy's soul, causing 390 to 487 Fire damage.

What to know: 1-minute cooldown and a soul shard; Decimation makes it shard-free and faster in execute range.

Portal of Summoning60

Begins a ritual that creates a summoning portal. The summoning portal can be used by 2 party or raid members to summon a targeted party or raid member. The ritual portal requires the caster and 2 additional party or raid members to complete. In order to participate, all players must be out of combat and right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete.

What to know: New at 60. A summoning portal that 2 party or raid members can use to summon someone; 2-minute cooldown. Its spell ID (437169) is the Season of Discovery rune's.

Armors and wards

IconSpellLevelWhat it does
Demon Skin1

Protects the caster, increasing armor by 120 and increases health regeneration by 5 health per 5 sec. for 30 min.

What to know: Demonic Aegis adds up to 30%.

Demon Armor20

Protects the caster, increasing armor by 570, Shadow resistance by 15 and increases health regeneration by 15 health per 5 sec. for 30 min.

What to know: Demonic Aegis adds up to 30%.

Soul Link30talent

When active, 30% of all damage taken by the caster is taken by your Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Incubus, or Felhunter Demon instead. In addition, both the Demon and the master will inflict 3% more damage. Lasts as long as the Demon is active.

What to know: Demonology's 21-point gold talent (Classic 31), needs Demonic Sacrifice.

Shadow Ward32

Absorbs 920 shadow damage. Lasts 30 sec.

Summoning

Healthstones and Soulstones

  • Create Healthstone: an instant heal for each party member, off the potion cooldown.
  • Create Soulstone: store a healer's soul before a risky pull. Its cooldown is 30 minutes.
  • Both vanish after 15 minutes logged out, so make them at the start of a session.

Crowd control

Interrupt and dispel: the Felhunter

  • Spell Lock interrupts a cast and Devour Magic removes a Magic effect. Devour Magic from 30; Spell Lock only from 36 (client), so the Felhunter has no interrupt in the level-30 beta. Improved Felhunter takes 6 s off Spell Lock.
  • No curse removal. A Mage, Druid or Orc racial covers curses.

Soul shards

  • From Drain Soul: always on a kill during the channel, sometimes from a damage tick. Shadowburn refunds one on a kill within 8 s, every time with Shadow and Flame 5/5.
  • Cost one: every demon but the Imp, Healthstones, Soulstones, Soul Fire (free in execute range with Decimation), Shadowburn, Ritual of Summoning, Firestone, Spellstone, Subjugate Demon, Portal of Summoning.
  • They don't stack. Soul bags (14 slots at 20, 16 at 30, 24 and 32 from Tailoring) go in the reagent slot; generic reagent bags don't take shards.
  • The Reagent Economy legacy perk covers vendor reagents only, so not shards.
