Destruction spells: Destruction spells
IconSpellLevelChangeWhat it does
1Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Burns the enemy for 158 Fire damage and then an additional 275 Fire damage over 15 sec.

What to know: Lower base damage with a bigger spell-power share. Conflagrate and Incinerate both want it on the target.

Ranks at level: 1 1 · 2 10 · 3 20 · 4 30 · 5 40 · 6 50 · 7 60 · 8 60

1Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Sends a shadowy bolt at the enemy, causing 253 to 283 Shadow damage.

What to know: Lower base damage (top rank 253–283, Classic 482–538) with a much bigger spell-power share. Ranks 1–4 are smoothed (rank 2 22–27, rank 3 40–46, rank 4 58–66), so each new rank is a real upgrade. Nightfall procs make it instant.

Ranks at level: 1 1 · 2 6 · 3 12 · 4 20 · 5 28 · 6 36 · 7 44 · 8 52 · 9 60 · 10 60

1As Classic (as in Classic Era) Buffs Damage

Summons an Imp under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: Free: no soul shard. Blizzard nerfed it on purpose after it out-damaged a Demonology Warlock.

4Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Corrupts the target, causing 438 Shadow damage over 18 sec.

What to know: Base damage roughly halved (top rank 438 over 18 s, Classic 822), with a bigger spell-power share. Instant with Improved Corruption 5/5. DoTs can crit in Forever and are worked out as they tick, not when cast.

Ranks at level: 1 4 · 2 14 · 3 24 · 4 34 · 5 44 · 6 54 · 7 60

8Renamed (same spell under a new name) Damage

Afflicts the target with agony, causing 552 Shadow damage over 24 sec. This damage is dealt slowly at first, and builds up as the Bane reaches its full duration. Only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Renamed from Curse of Agony, and no longer a curse. One Bane per Warlock per target, so it runs beside your curse. Top rank 552 over 24 s (Classic 1044). A Mage's Remove Lesser Curse and an Orc's Shatter Curse remove Banes too.

Ranks at level: 1 8 · 2 18 · 3 28 · 4 38 · 5 48 · 6 58

8As Classic (as in Classic Era) Utility

Strikes fear in the enemy, causing it to run in fear for up to 20 sec. Damage caused may interrupt the effect. Only 1 target can be feared at a time.

What to know: 20 yards at every rank. Blizzard calls this an oversight: the old Affliction range talent was reworded to cover damaging spells only, which dropped Fear. Whether it becomes 30 yards baseline, comes back through a talent or stays is undecided.

Ranks at level: 1 8 · 2 32 · 3 56

10Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Healer Utility

Creates a Major Healthstone that can be used to instantly restore 1440 health.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: 120 health at rank 1, 1440 at rank 5 (Classic 1200). Healthstones have their own 2-minute cooldown, separate from potions (client data; the same as Classic). Conjured stones vanish if you are logged out for more than 15 minutes.

Ranks at level: 1 10 · 2 22 · 3 34 · 4 46 · 5 58

10Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage Utility

Drains the soul of the target, causing 420 Shadow damage over 15 sec. Non-trivial targets damaged by Drain Soul have a chance to grant you a Soul Shard. Non-trivial targets killed by Drain Soul will always grant you a Soul shard. Soul Shards are required for other spells.

What to know: Shards without a kill: a damaging tick on a non-trivial target can grant a soul shard, and a kill during the channel always does. Starting any other cast ends the channel, so make it the last spell on a dying mob. Ticks can crit.

Ranks at level: 1 10 · 2 24 · 3 38 · 4 52

14Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage Healer

Transfers 51 health every 1 second from the target to the caster. Lasts 5 sec.

What to know: A 5-second channel at 20 yards. Improved Drains, Soul Siphon and Nightfall all work with it.

Ranks at level: 1 14 · 2 22 · 3 30 · 4 38 · 5 46 · 6 54

18Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Inflict searing pain on the enemy target, causing 107 to 126 Fire damage. Causes a high amount of threat.

What to know: High threat by design. With Demonic Brand it becomes a tool that hands threat to your demon.

Ranks at level: 1 18 · 2 26 · 3 34 · 4 42 · 5 50 · 6 58

20Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Calls down a fiery rain to burn enemies in the area of effect for 885 Fire damage over 8 sec.

Ranks at level: 1 20 · 2 34 · 3 46 · 4 58

20Destruction talent, tier 3Talent (comes from a talent) Damage

Instantly blasts the target for 259 to 288 Shadow damage. If the target dies within 8 sec of Shadowburn, and yields experience or honor, the caster gains a Soul Shard.

What to know: Destruction's 11-point gold talent: 15 s cooldown, 30 yards (Classic 20), and a shard back if the target dies within 8 s (Classic 5).

Ranks at level: 1 20 · 2 24 · 3 32 · 4 40 · 5 48 · 6 56

20As Classic (as in Classic Era) Damage Utility

Summons an Incubus under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: A male Sayaad with the same spells as the Succubus (in Classic Era since 1.14.2). Its model is a lower-resolution swap.

20As Classic (as in Classic Era) Damage Utility

Summons a Succubus under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: The Sayaad. Seduction is your best humanoid crowd control. Costs a soul shard.

25Destruction talent, tier 4Talent (comes from a talent) Damage

Ignites a target that is already afflicted by your Immolate spell, dealing 251 to 313 Fire damage and consuming your Immolate effect.

What to know: Destruction's 16-point gold talent, so level 25; no longer needs Improved Immolate. Much lower damage than Classic (88–111 at rank 1, 251–313 at rank 6); 84–106 at level 25, rising to 88–111 at 30 (it scales with level).

Ranks at level: 1 25 · 2 32 · 3 40 · 4 48 · 5 54 · 6 60

28Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Buffs Damage

Creates a Major Firestone which can be used to enchant your weapon with Fire, increasing your spell critical strike chance by 2% and the damage done by your Fire spells by up to 21.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: Now a weapon enchant, not an off-hand: +1–2% spell crit and more Fire damage.

Ranks at level: 1 28 · 2 36 · 3 46 · 4 56

30Destruction talent, tier 5Talent (comes from a talent) Damage

Afflicts the target for 5 min, causing 15% of all damage done by the Warlock to other targets to also be dealt to the cursed target. Bane of Havoc is limited to 1 target, and only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Destruction's 21-point gold talent: mark one target, and 15% of your damage to anything else also hits it. Uses your Bane slot.

30Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Ignites the area surrounding the caster, causing 210 Fire damage to himself and 210 Fire damage to all nearby enemies every 1 sec. Lasts 15 sec.

What to know: Can crit. Burns you for the same amount every second as it burns nearby enemies, so a healer or Health Funnel tricks are needed for long channels.

Ranks at level: 1 30 · 2 42 · 3 54

30As Classic (as in Classic Era) Utility Damage

Summons a Felhunter under the command of the Warlock.

What to know: Devour Magic (your dispel) from 30, and Spell Lock (your interrupt) from 36, past the beta cap. Costs a soul shard.

36Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Buffs Damage

Creates a Major Spellstone which can be used to enchant your weapon with Shadow, increasing your spell haste by 2% and the damage done by your Shadow spells by up to 21.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: Now a weapon enchant, not an off-hand: +1–2% spell haste and more Shadow damage.

Ranks at level: 1 36 · 2 48 · 3 60

40As Classic (as in Classic Era) Utility

Howl, causing 5 enemies within 10 yds to flee in terror for 15 sec. Damage caused may interrupt the effect.

What to know: As Classic: up to 5 enemies within 10 yards, 40-second cooldown.

Ranks at level: 1 40 · 2 54

40Destruction talent, tier 7Talent (comes from a talent) Damage

Deals 201 to 233 Fire damage to your target and an additional 25% damage if the target is afflicted by Immolate.

What to know: Destruction's 31-point capstone at 40, the core spell Blizzard built the spec around. 90–104 at level 40, up to 100–114 by 49, +25% on a target with your Immolate.

Ranks at level: 1 40 · 2 50 · 3 60

42Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage Healer Utility

Causes the enemy target to run in horror for 3 sec and causes 460 Shadow damage. The caster gains 100% of the damage caused in health.

What to know: As Classic, with slightly lower damage: a 3-second horror and a self-heal for the damage dealt; 2-minute cooldown.

Ranks at level: 1 42 · 2 50 · 3 58

48Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Damage

Burn the enemy's soul, causing 390 to 487 Fire damage.

What to know: 1-minute cooldown and a soul shard; Decimation makes it shard-free and faster in execute range.

Ranks at level: 1 48 · 2 56

50As Classic (as in Classic Era) Damage Tank

Summons a meteor from the Twisting Nether, causing 200 Fire damage and stunning all enemy targets in the area for 2 sec. An Infernal rises from the crater, under the command of the caster for 5 min. Once control is lost, the Infernal must be Subjugated to maintain control. Can only be used outdoors.

What to know: Needs an Infernal Stone (client data). The Reagent Economy legacy perk covers vendor reagents like this one, but not soul shards.

60Renamed (same spell under a new name) Damage

Afflicts the target with impending doom, causing 1742 Shadow damage after 1 min. If the target dies from this damage, there is a chance that a Doomguard will be summoned. Cannot be cast on players. Only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Renamed from Curse of Doom. 1742 after one minute (Classic 3200), with a much bigger spell-power share; 1-minute cooldown. It shares the Bane slot with Agony, so a target gets one or the other. Can summon a Doomguard if the Bane kills.

Utility and buffs 18

Utility and buffs: Destruction spells
IconSpellLevelChangeWhat it does
4Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Utility

Physical damage caused by the target is reduced by 37 for 2 min. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Slightly bigger than Classic (37 at top rank, was 31). Amplify Curse adds 50%.

Ranks at level: 1 4 · 2 12 · 3 22 · 4 32 · 5 42 · 6 52

6Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Utility

Converts 424 Health into 424 Mana for you. Spirit increases the amount converted.

What to know: Scales with Spirit, not spell damage. The formula is a base amount plus your Spirit: 30 + Spirit at rank 1, up to 430 + Spirit at rank 6 (the base figures are for the rank's top level; a little lower below it). In game the tooltip uses your Spirit. A Priest's Divine Spirit makes every tap bigger.

Ranks at level: 1 6 · 2 16 · 3 26 · 4 36 · 5 46 · 6 56

14Changed (numbers or effects differ from Classic Era) Utility

Curses the target with recklessness, reducing the target's armor by 505 for 2 min. Cursed enemies will not flee and will ignore Fear and Horror effects. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Lowers armour only; the target no longer gains attack power. The tooltip still says the target won't flee and ignores Fear and Horror, so it cancels your own Fear and Death Coil on that target.

Ranks at level: 1 14 · 2 28 · 3 42 · 4 56

16As Classic (as in Classic Era) Buffs Utility

Allows the target to breathe underwater for 10 min.

18As Classic (as in Classic Era) Utility

Creates a Major Soulstone. The Soulstone can be used to store one target's soul. If the target dies while their soul is stored, they will be able to resurrect with 2200 health and 2800 mana.

Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

What to know: Stores a party member's soul so they can rise after dying. 30-minute cooldown (client item data, as Classic).

Ranks at level: 1 18 · 2 30 · 3 40 · 4 50 · 5 60

20Earlier (learned at a lower level than in Classic) Buffs Utility

Curses the target for 5 min, reducing Magic resistances by 75 and increasing Magic damage taken by 10%. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.

What to know: Learned at 20 (Classic 32) and covers all Magic schools, which is why Curse of Shadow is gone: 4/6/8/10% more Magic damage taken at 20/30/40/50. The raid curse, and free to keep up now that your damage DoTs are Banes.

Ranks at level: 1 20 · 2 30 · 3 40 · 4 50

Begins a ritual that summons the targeted group member. Requires the caster and 2 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must be out of combat and right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete.

Summons an Eye of Kilrogg and binds your vision to it. The eye moves quickly but is very fragile.

Ranks at level: 1 26 · 2 50

Lasts up to 5 min. If you repeatedly subjugate the same demon, it will become more difficult to control with each attempt.

60As Classic (as in Classic Era) Utility

Begins a ritual that sacrifices a random participant to summon a doomguard. The doomguard must be immediately subjugated or it will attack the ritual participants. Requires the caster and 4 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete.
